POULTRY DISEASES CONTROL

                     DISEASE

unlike ailments, are caused by bacterial, fungal, or viral influences. There are a myriad of various diseases that afflict chickens, and it seems that every year there are new diseases, or at least a greater understanding of current diseases, new medications and vaccines, and methods of remedy or treatment. The science of treatment and prevention of diseases within chickens has, in the past, been very limited, but with a renewed sense of interest, especially in the backyard chicken, headway is slowly being made with viable treatments. What is found many times when trying to diagnose disease in chickens is that a variety of diseases will be lumped together into one general category because the symptoms are very similar. The following is a basic list of the most common diseases that you may encounter while caring for a flock of chickens.

CHRONIC RESPIRATORY DISEASE (CRD)                    Chronic respiratory disease is an upper respiratory infection caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum. The disease occurs very commonly in backyard chicken flocks worldwide. Young birds less than 4 months of age, and roosters, tend to have more severe infections than older or adult birds. The characteristic signs include gurgling sounds, nasal discharge, sneezing, gaping, and coughing.                             Treatment includes mixing garlic, ginger and pepper (cayenne)

 NEWCASTLE DISEASE

There are two forms of the disease- cutaneous dry and diphtheritic or wet. Both may present in the same flock. The dry form is manifest as pimples or scabs on the skin (mainly on unfeathered parts of the body). The diphtheritic form shows cankers or yellow lesions in the mouth, oesophagus or trachea. Other symptoms include blindness, feed refusal, lowered egg production, facial swelling.
Treatment includes use of Christmas Melon and Aloe vera.

FOWL POX

is transmitted by direct contact between infected and susceptible birds or by mosquitos chicken pox (not to be confused with chicken pox in humans; the human disease does not affect poultry and vice versa), sore head, avian diphtheria, bird pox.                                 Treatment includes the use of aloe vera
